If you’re a fan of Marshall Mathers, you probably know what to expect at this point. Eminem makes music about where he came from, how he deals with who he is now, and if there’s time, he likes to mock the celebrities around him. It is of no surprise to anyone, then, that with Relapse, his first new album in nearly five years, that Eminem has stayed true to form, but done so in a surprisingly engaging way.
Relapse is just the same old music that we have grown accustomed to. However, he does not forget who his target demographic is; angry young men. His fans will not be disappointed, even though he goes as far as poking fun at those who buy his albums.
The darkness he lets out in his music, much like his single ‘Stan’, is as relevant on Relapse, as it was on past albums, however he seems to be having more fun with it now.
Interspersed throughout the album are short skits, one of which features an angry music executive Eminem allegedly shot berating the artist for his long hiatus from the music industry, resulting in its collapse and the loss of many jobs. While this might seem self-aggrandizing, it is not without merit, and the record industry has no doubt breathed a collective sigh of relief that Slim Shady is back.
Dr. Dre has produced every track, as always, giving the album a polished feel. ‘We Made You,’ which attacks the celebrities that drive Mathers crazy, features a strong, vocal track by backup singer Charmagne Tripp. This is, without a doubt, the funniest song on the album.
Mr. Mathers, Welcome Back. You have been missed.
